A contact form should help someone start a conversation. Every field should have a reason to be there. Review your form from the perspective of a visitor using one hand on a small screen.

Ask only for what you need now

For an initial website enquiry, a name, an email address and a short project description may be enough. Collect billing details after the project is agreed. If a phone number is optional, mark it as optional and let the form submit without it.

Make the fields understandable

Give each input a visible label instead of relying only on placeholder text that disappears while typing. Use the appropriate email input and autocomplete attributes. Explain unfamiliar terms and show an example when a field needs a particular format.

Keep the visitor’s work

If validation fails or the network drops, preserve the text already entered. Put a clear error next to the affected field and explain how to fix it. Do not report success until the server confirms that the enquiry was accepted.

Check the full mobile journey

Open the page on a phone, complete every field, submit a test enquiry and confirm it reaches the intended inbox or system. Check that the on-screen keyboard does not hide the submit button. Test both a successful submission and an invalid email address.

Explain data use clearly

Link to your privacy information near the form and collect only the details needed for the enquiry. Keep optional marketing subscription separate from the request for service.

Try this today: count the fields on your form and write down why each one is required before the first conversation. Remove or make optional any field without a clear purpose.
